Over Easy Cafe has something to brag about: not only have they been highlighted by local chef Beau MacMillan on Food Network's "Best Thing I Ever Ate," Guy Fieri on "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives," Phoenix Magazine's "Where to Eat" issue, one of the 50 Best Restaurants by Foothills magazine, named one of America's Best Brunches by Yahoo Travel, and the Best Breakfast in AZ by Food Network Magazine - they really do serve a mean breakfast! With all the accolades, we decided to see what the fuss was about one Sunday morning in January. Over Easy Cafe is run by a father son duo of Chef Aaron May and his father, Brad, who came to Arizona from Chicago. There are two locations in Phoenix: one in Arcadia in a strip mall at 48th St and Indian School, and one in North Scottsdale next to the Ice Den. We visited both the North Scottsdale and Indian School location, and consulted our fellow YELPers on what to eat.

One menu item we kept hearing over and over was the Waffle Dog ($8 pictured right). Quite frankly, the waffle dog, looks unimpressively like a corn dog, but since it was named a best thing I ever ate and loved by local Phoenicians, we went for it. The waffle dogs are served in 3's, but for an extra $3 you can add on extras if you're sharing this dish. It's made with a 2 oz 100% pork breakfast sausage infused with sage that is dipped in waffle batter and fried. It's sprinkled with powdered sugar and served with real maple syrup. Sounds simple, but tastes great!

One of the consistent things we hear when you eat at a great Phoenix restaurant is fresh ingredients, and Over Easy Cafe is no different. Local Hickman farm eggs are delivered daily, the Brioche bread, used in the French Toast and Over Easy Entree, is made at a local Phoenix bakery, and all sauces, biscuits, and gravies are made from scratch. If you're looking for a deal, Over Easy Cafe has a happy hour from 6:30am - 7:30am. And no, it isn't a special price on their Bloody Mary's or Mimosas, it's $1 off their breakfast sandwiches (served without any sides). The Ice Den

location is a little more spacious (pictured top left) but doesn't have the same flare as the Arcadia restaurant with it's colorful chalkboards, pig and cow umbrellas hanging from the ceiling, and open kitchen with figurines above the coffee station area. The food is just as delicious at both, but in Arcadia the waiter introduced us to the unique blend of maple syrup and Cholula hot sauce to dip the waffle dogs in. One of the waitresses picked up this bit of southern flare on vacation, and as weird as it sounds - it works! We also tried a "wolf pack" made of bacon, eggs, and cheese sandwiched between two layers of hash browns. It was tasty with an over easy egg, but the waffle dog was still the champ of the meal.

Most of the time we're big advocates of ordering a savory and sweet dish and sharing, not only to taste more great food, but so we don't wind up in a sugar coma after breakfast. The Caramelized Banana & Pecan Brioche French Toast ($7.50) is the first time we could order a sweet dish and probably finish the whole thing! The secret is in the salted caramel sauce. This dish isn't perfect all the time - and really how many of us cook the same thing to perfection every time? Without the caramel sauce the brioche french toast would be a bit dry, and a whole banana instead of 5 slices would have been nice, but the sauce has a light flavor without being overly sweet. All mixed together, it was a really great flavor combination that we'd absolutely order again!

Here's the big question - is Over Easy Cafe the BEST breakfast in Arizona? It's in the running! Can we truly name just one place as the best breakfast in AZ? Honestly? No! We have some great breakfast joints, and they all hold something special and unique depending on where you are in the Valley. But we absolutely suggest you add Over Easy to your repertoire of favorite breakfast restaurants - and believe what you read - try the Waffle Dogs and Caramelized Banana and Pecan French Toast!
