Perk Eatery in North Scottsdale came into the morning meal and lunch scene in November of 2010, and has developed a huge fan base of morning munchers. With a 4 star Yelp rating, 5 star urban spoon rating, and kudos from Arizona Foothills Magazine and Phoenix Magazine, Phoenix locals are discovering this hidden gem set back in a strip mall at 64th and Greenway. Perk is run by the husband and wife team of Pauline and Carmen Martinez who hail from Michigan and are both the front and back of house. There's no mistaking Carmen in his floppy white chef hat as he expedites and runs the incredibly friendly waitstaff. The outstanding vibe in Perk is family and neighborhood. It's good food, for good people in the community. In fact, Pauline and Carmen put a portion of the proceeds back into several community and charitable organizations, and they purchase their ingredients from local family owned ranches and farms with an emphasis on organic products and meat raised without hormones or antibiotics. Their certified organic coffee, ground fresh for each pot, was a little bitter for our palette, but this place oozes a sense of community so strong, we'll overlook a fluke bad cup of joe.
What first made us decide to visit Perk Eatery were reviews on the Caramelized Banana Pecan Pancakes (waffle version pictured left $8.99) and their seasonal Pumpkin Pancakes, because really, in the Fall how can you resist anything pumpkin? The best way to keep up with Perk's specials is by liking them on facebook because they do a great job keeping fans up to date with the menu items as they're being created. In fact, they continue the neighborhood atmosphere and sense of community by asking "what do you guys/gals want me to make this weekend?" as well as hosting a Pancake Throw Down "Pancake Quest 2012." Let us just say, when a place is confident enough to be the host of an event like a pancake throw down, it's cause they can dish it up and take the heat. After having two of their off the griddle dishes, we're believers in their fluffy concoction capabilities!
The best way to balance a sweet griddle favorite is with an omelet or Scramble, and Perk Eatery does both with finesse. Our first love on their menu was the Fancy Pants Scramble ($9.99) made with 3 eggs, organic spinach, turkey, melted brie, and a fig compote. We could have done without the fig compote, but it's served on the side, so really does it matter? The scramble was delicious! Their biscuits and gravy (pictured left) are not a normal menu item, so you have to watch facebook for an update on when they're coming - but they make a fluffy biscuit and are heavy on the pepper in the sausage gravy. This is not a dish that lacks flavor, yet won't blow out your pallet, and the Rosemary Potatoes are really tasty.
If you live in the 85254, this is a place where you can come every Sunday and they'll learn your name. Where you might run into someone from school, or church, or down the street. And where you're guaranteed to leave with a full belly and smile on your face.
