Butterfield's Pancake House and Restaurant

7388 E. Shea Blvd.
Scottsdale, AZ 85260

We love breakfast. Not daily, but a good Sunday morning breakfast where you don't plan on eating again until at least 3 or 4 pm? It's unlike anything else. We had that experience one Sunday morning at Shea and Scottsdale Rd. Butterfield's has only one restaurant in Phoenix, and started with 3 other locations in the Chicago area. We heard about this great breakfast place from some foodie friends, and boy are we glad we did!

Butterfield's in Scottsdale has about 50-55 tables and outdoor seating, all of which were full, and had a line about 20 minutes deep - which we love because it means the food is good enough to wait for instead of driving 300 yards away for Denny's. Once you're seated, you immediately notice the orange juicer against the wall. Whole oranges are fed into the juicer and a pitcher catches the juice minutes before it's brought to your table ($3.29 a glass). This is a great example of the absolutely fresh ingredients that makes their food delicious. One of the things we ordered (in a breakfast for two that could have fed 4 people, but we finished every bite) was the Granola Breakfast Sundae. We know what you're thinking - you went to a restaurant for them to mix cut up fruit with yogurt and granola? You could do that at home for a lot less than $7.75, which is true, if we weren't talking fresh, seasonal fruit that's perfectly ripened and all natural granola. This is absolutely something we'd order again!

We put this place to the ultimate test. There's a few things breakfast restaurants can do well, but you don't usually find them all in one place. I've been to pancake houses with some great pancakes, but almost inedible Eggs Benedict. Or delicious scramblers, but couldn't make biscuits and gravy to save their life. So we ordered the California Scramble ($8.95), Buttermilk pancakes, and Biscuits and Gravy. They got it all right! The pancakes were light and fluffy, and we were able to eat every bite PLUS everything else. The Biscuits and Gravy had the perfect amount of sausage and thickness, and the scramble had a great balance of flavors perfectly blended into the eggs. Their hash browns were crisp on the outside, but soft on the inside, and there was nothing we ate that we wouldn't order again! If you find yourself within a ten mile radius - find your way to Butterfield's one of our favorite breakfast joints in Arizona!
