Food Truck Friday

Food Truck Friday is in Phoenix Public Market's Parking Lot

721 N Central Ave
Phoenix, Arizona 85004

My first experience with wheeled eateries was in 2009 in Austin, TX when my girlfriends and I discovered South Congress (So-Co)'s trailer park eateries and I fell in love with "Hey Cupcake." To date, I have not found a better cupcake, but I've also been hard pressed to find a collection of local food trucks in Phoenix. You can imagine my delight when I discovered that every Friday from 11am - 1:30pm the food trucks congregate next to Phoenix Public Market and sell their tasty treasures. Yes, there was a part of me that was a little skeptical about the quality of the food, but I've never had food poisoning (and tend to be an adventurous eater as a result) so I decided to go down and check it out!

Just to be safe, I started with the beet strEAT's vegetarian food truck and sampled the grilled cheese sandwich and Caprese Sandwich. The Caprese was good, but the ciabatta roll was a little too thick and made it hard to eat - the grilled cheese however, was not your typical grilled cheese. This one was gourmet, with Feta cheese and tomatoes surrounded by melted goodness. I plan on going back again just for the grilled cheese (in fact this Food Truck rolls up to the Whole Foods on Raintree every Third Thursday between 11-1:30pm for their Mobile Food Court Lunch) so I already know when I'll be standing in it's line again!

We treated ourselves to a sorbet from Sweet Republic before we left Food Truck Friday, and boy am I glad we did! Sweet Republic also has a store front in Scottsdale (9160 E Shea Blvd, Scottsdale, AZ 85260 Open noon-10pm, 480-248-6979) and is sold at Whole Foods and Phoenix Public Market, but I'd never even heard of them until I came across their Food Truck and sampled the Basil-Lime Sorbet. Then we stood in line again and tried the Lavender ice cream... A week later, while walking around First Friday's I spotted them and had a taste of the Pumpkin Spice ice cream...and then a week later I had the Four Peaks Hop-knot ice cream when I came across them at the Food Truck Festival. But I digress! Sweet Republic uses milk and cream from Arizona dairy farms, and sustainable, environmentally conscious methods. They've been featured in several local magazines, as well as a Food Network "Best thing I Ever Ate" show and USA Today's "USA's Best Ice Cream Parlors" which sets this Food Truck miles beyond the ice cream truck of our childhoods!

Some of the other trucks that were at the Food Truck Friday I went to was Hey Joe Filipino Street Food, Short Leash Hot Dogs, Torched Goodness, Jamburritos KJUN, and Riteway Catering. In total, there are over 30 trucks that belong to the Phoenix Food Truck Coalition and can be seen over the Valley. For updates on the trucks and their locations, the easiest way is to follow them on Facebook or Twitter, but every know where to find them!
