Things To Do With Kids in Phoenix
Are there ever enough things to do with kids in Phoenix? It may not feel like it. Kids have a lot of energy and unending curiosity, which makes it feel like there's never enough new stuff. However, there are several things to do with kids in Phoenix that you might not know about!
We have a few activities, like
local runs and walks
that are usually focused on a 5K or 10K, but often have a fun family mile long run/walk that gets your kids (and you!) active, contributing to a cause, and is a great opportunity to build a sense of charity and community.
There are some great museums in Phoenix that your kids will love (for a complete list of EVERY museum available,
),but we have a few favorites.
The Children's Musuem
is a hands on, interactive Museum that allows your child to play, explore, and discover. They offer special classes, like Brain Time, Yoga, Math Before You Can Count, and musical adventures as a fun way to aid in your child's development. Speaking of Music, another great thing to do with kids in Phoenix is
The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM).
The MIM introduces budding musicians to the history of music and instruments, and allows them to play some of them in their experience gallery. The MIM also has a variety of free performances and classes that allow children to experience music. See our
for days and times. The
Arizona Science Center
is another great hands on experience for your children to explore the mysteries of science. And if you think the
Desert Botanical Garden
is just for old people who like to look at cactus, take a trip down and I bet you'll change your mind! The Fall of 2011, the gardens had a Bug theme for kids, with big bug statues hiding along the trails, showings of bug movies like Charlotte's Web, and a Monarch Butterfly Exhibit for children.
One of the reasons we live in AZ is the weather, and there are several unique parks and outdoor areas full of things to do with kids in Phoenix where you can enjoy some sunshine as your kids play. One of our favorites is the
McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park.
It not only has a great playground and rentable covered ramadas for picnics and Birthday parties, but also a train and carousel kids can ride. We love the variety of activities, and that you can visit, play, and do a few activities for little to no cost!
A few other things to do with kids in Phoenix that we love, are the indoor playgrounds around the valley. Take them to The Ice Den for ice skating. Let them jump to their heart's content at
AZ Air Time
or Jump Street indoor trampoline park. Take them to laser tag, goofy golf, or any of our
valley wide water parks.
For animal lovers, our personal favorite is
Out of Africa Wildlife Park
now relocated to Camp Verde, AZ, my family used to go once a month when it was in Fountain Hills. The difference between this and the Zoo, it the level of interactivity and energy from the animals. Several zoo trip, you are excited to find where the animal is hiding, but rarely see them at play. With Out of Africa, their tiger splash lets you see the animals having fun and playing in a pool with pool toys, or watch them at feeding time, and be reminded that that beautiful lion isn't just a big kitty! With that said, we do still love
The Phoenix Zoo
but for different reasons. The Phoenix Zoo was voted one of the Nation's Top 5 Zoos for Kids, and offers several interactive and educational opportunities. What we love the most outside of a yearly trip to see the animals, are the Phoenix Zoo's events. Most holidays have something special, like Boo! at the Zoo, Howl-o-Ween, Zoo Lights, Zoo Year's Eve, Walk in the Wild 5K, and many more! Zoo Lights was a family tradition that I even carried into my teens. There's something so magical about their light display, and the way it times with Christmas music. Don't worry, you'll still get glimpses of animals - at least the LED versions! Already visited both of these? Check out our list of other
Greater Phoenix Area Zoos.
In Phoenix, we don't experience the same change of seasons as other areas of the country, but that doesn't mean our kids can't have the experience of picking apples, pumpkin patches, or fruit festivals! There are a variety of
that let you pick seasonal fruits and vegetables, and make an event of it. Use one of them to create a family tradition surrounding your grandmother's apple pie recipe, or use our things to do with kids in Phoenix tradition and go to a new pumpkin patch and pick your pumpkins before every Halloween to make each year memorable!
